Every year on February 4, World Cancer Day is celebrated in order to spread awareness about cancer. Numerous workshops and campaigns are organized on this day. Many celebrities in India, including Yuvraj Singh, Sonali Bendre, Lisa Ray, and Manisha Koirala have been through cancer and defeated it.
This year the World Cancer Day is being celebrated with the theme- ‘I am and I will’. For the next three years, the day will be celebrated with the same theme. On World Cancer Day 2000, a Charter of Paris against Cancer was formed. It was signed between UNESCO and the French President Jacques Chirac.
This year, Sonali Bendre, who has recently fought cancer, posted on Instagram. She shared a video in which she talked about her experience with the deadly disease and how she fought against it. Sonali was diagnosed in 2018 and she said that the disease gave her the “patience to look for the light at the end of the tunnel.” At the end of the video, she said, “For all of us going through this, let’s remind us that cancer doesn’t define us.”
She captioned the post saying, “Note to self. For the rest of you, listen to your body and go for regular checkups, early detection helps.”
In the video, Sonali Bendre says, “Change is the only constant in life and how life has changed. These two years have taught me many lessons. Gave me the patience to look for the light at the end of the tunnel. In this, I found my new normal and the strength to switch on the sunshine every day. The journey of knowing who I am reminds me that I am much more than this. For all of us going through this, let’s remind us that cancer doesn’t define us.”
Sonali Bendre took the treatment for cancer in New York in 2018. She went there with her husband Goldie Behl, who is a filmmaker, and her son Ranveer also visited her frequently. She also had a book club in which she organized numerous sessions between coming-of-age authors and readers. While she was staying in the Big Apple, her friends Sussane Khan, Gayatri Joshi and Hrithik Roshan also visited her. She came back to Mumbai in December 2018.
